How to make Strawberry Cream Cheese Heart Puffs
Ingredients
- Puff Pastry - Store bought (ready-made) frozen Puff Pastry sheet thawed until ready to be rolled out
- Strawberries - Fresh Strawberries
- Sugar - Powdered or Castor Sugar (Breakfast Sugar)
- Cream Cheese - Soft room temperature cream cheese
Start by rolling out the thawed puff pastry sheet - just enough for it to flatten out, making sure it's still thick. (If you roll out too thin, the puffs wont rise into those flaky layers that you see). The next step is to cut them into heart shapes and after transferring to a parchment sheet, gently make insertions with smaller heart cookie-cutter or a toothpick, making sure that you’re not fully cutting them, just scoring without fully cutting through the pastry. Then add cream cheese, strawberry, sugar and bake...
... until you get golden edges and the puffs look very crispy, flaky and totally puffed up. Finish these strawberry tarts/ puffs with drizzling some honey or syrup and enjoy! These are perfect fruit pastries to enjoy for breakfast too!
Tips and possible variations:
- CREAM CHEESE: It is best to keep your cream cheese at the kitchen counter for some time, until it naturally softens up to room temperature. This way it becomes easy to spread.
- PUFF PASTRY: Avoid adding any flour to the pastry sheet when you roll out. If your pastry is rolled out too thin, it wont rise into as many flaky layers.
- STRAWBERRY MIX: When you add sugar to chopped strawberries, it will tend to leave out liquid (syrup) - and you don't want that for this recipe. Hence add sugar to strawberries right toward the end (only after you’ve added cream cheese to the heart shaped puff pastries)
- MIXTURE QUANTITY: Don't add a lot of strawberry mixture & make sure they are within the inner hearts - it's the outer layer with no mixture that puffs up into crispy flaky puffs & if there if a lot is added, the puffs would just sink in rather than rising into crunchy layers.
- VARIATIONS: Feel free to mix it up or add some blueberries/ nuts to the strawberry mix or simply switch to apple and cinnamon to make some breakfast apple pastries.
